Re: Case Numbers 9085 –
Morgantown Plant
9086 & 9079 – Chalk Point
Mirant Mid-Atlantic (Morgantown Power Plant) is requesting 1.66
million gallons per day from the Patuxent Aquifer from two 18" diameter
wells, to an estimated depth of 1,900 feet
Mirant Mid-Atlantic (Chalk Point Power Plant) is requesting 0.9 million gallons
per day from the Patuxent Aquifer from two 16" diameter wells, to an
estimated depth of 2,100 feet.
These wells are being requested for scrubbers on the cooling
towers.
We are requesting all data regarding these requests. We need to determine the total background on
this proposal.
Apparently, there was an agreement reached in a Virginia
Federal Court that fined
Mirant and in an
agreement they are to modify their plants to reduce
air pollution. That the use of groundwater for industrial purposes of these
quantities will cause a major problem is a given and must be seriously
reviewed.
The Mirant request undermines the
intentions of the Water Resource Committee's recommendations to limit potable
(suitable for drinking) water usage for human consumption only and to require
the use of either graywater or river water for
industrial purposes such as Mirant's request for
water that would be used for cooling tower scrubbers.
The fact that the Charles County government has and is continuing
to negotiate a contract with WSSC for additional water for its citizens should
highlight the fact that we are experiencing difficulties in obtaining potable
groundwater. Many feel that agreeing to
grant Mirant their request for our precious
groundwater to use in their scrubbers is in fact a politically motivated move
instead of socially responsible one.
