Thoughts on Commission 2000

by Jon Robinson

For much of the last two years a group of citizens met as Commission 2000 to recommend growth policies for Prince George's County. In its wisdom, the County chose 2 representatives from development and business interests for each environmental or conimunity representative. In spite of this the report that came out contained many policies particularly in regard to school over crowding that were great improvements over previous and current policy. It also loosened some restrictions on adequate public facilities in developed areas to encourage redevelopment in older communities.

For those who have followed the County Council it should come as no surprise that when it came time to vote on the recommendations of Commission 2000 report, they kept all of the things that facilitated developers getting what they want and stripped out the Schools adequate public facilities part. The majority saying that they needed to have a study of the economic effect on developers. Of course that is what the Commission 2000 spent almost 2 years working on, but if your major campaign patrons don't like the result, well then study it again until you get the result they want.

It should be noted that although the original legislation required that participants in Commission 2000 be residents of Prince George's County, the development community had some members who lived outside the County representing them. But we already knew that the laws in this County are selectively enforced. Thus it was not too surprising when the developer representative from Montgomery County, continually offered resolutions that would have condemned our Schools to continued overcrowding. After all, his children didn't go to school here. Fortunately his resolutions were voted down by Commission 2000, unfortunately the County Council enacted them.

All is not lost!' In two years seven of the nine council seats will be open because term limits and there is no reason why the other two candidates should not have some competition. The Sierra Club would like to see pro environment - pro community candidates elected to the Council. We invite you to consider running for County Council. If you are interested please get in contact with me, Jon Robinson 301-422-0064. The Sierra Club has excellent training on how to manage and run a political campaign. We can also recruit member volunteers to work in your campaign. If community groups and environmental groups do not come forward with good candidates we will get the same old developer financed candidates as before. If you would like to run for County Council, now is the time to start.
