Pond Run / White Rocks, VA/WV
Photos by Ken Clark and Mike Juskelis, 2005/07/02.
Mike adds another flower to his digital collection. His picture follows this one.
Paterson's Curse / Purple Bugloss (Echium plantagineum), growing on the gravel road. This invasive contains pyrrolizidine alkaloids, making it somewhat toxic to
animals, and it may cause skin irritation as Mike discoverd. [Mike]
This looks much like the rare Hickory Hairstreak, but is more likely a variation of the common Banded Hairstreak.
A rare find during the day, this Luna Moth was napping on the underside of a leaf.
Waites Run. [Mike]
View of Halfmoon Lookout from the Pond Run Vista. [Mike]
Fly Poison (Amianthium muscaetoxicum) patches are scattered along the ridge.
Wild Indigo (Baptisia tinctoria).
Ganoderma lucidum, a varnish polypore called Ling Chih by the Chinese (aka the mushroom of immortality) and valued for its healing powers. [Mike]
The group took a long break on White Rocks.
