Great Falls MD, Billy Goat Trail

Photos by Ken Clark and Doug Trimble, 2004/06/06.

The view from the first bridge going to the falls.

The second bridge going to the falls must be the best fishing spot. How many Great Blue Herons can you see? Look closer, there are more. Try the full-resolution version to find even more herons. When you have found all you can, check the Heron Quiz Answer Page.

Great Falls, with the river swollen by Saturday's rain.

Mike and Kristen brave the most intimidating climb of the trail.

A buttonbush flower attracts a bee.

Widow Skimmer Dragonfly (female).

American Water Willow (Justicia americana), about a half inch across, near the beach.

The red-eyed brood-X cicadas are quieting down, nearly done.

Prickly Pear Cactus was just starting to bloom.

Lots of Deptford Pink flowers (less than a half inch across) grow along the towpath.

The end of the hike, back at lock 20, in time to catch the ranger's lock demo.
