Massanutten East, Shawl Gap / Sherman Gap, GWNF, VA
Photos by Michael Juskelis, 2003/10/18.
Fulya plays with a new companion at our first break, a walking stick bug.
At times we could see views on both sides of the trail. To the west is Fort Valley nestled between the two Massanutten ridges.
To the east is Shenandoah, and "The Point" in the Shenandoah River, a landmark for hikers and canoeists.
The group takes a break on Sherman Gap Trail.
Another great view of Fort Valley as we descend on Sherman Gap Trail.
The group regroups and proceeds down Sherman Gap after traversing an area of severe blow-downs created by Hurricane Isabel and/or an earlier storm.
A log full of "Pear Puffballs", so named because they look like inverted pears. The greens spores are called Devil's Snuff.
