Certified Hike Leaders
The Young Sierrans would not be where it is today without its fine leadership. Before becoming a leader, one must become a Sierra Club member, help lead hikes, complete an on-line training course and test, obtain Basic First Aid certification, and organize and lead a hike with a favorable evaluation. Come meet the people who organize, scout, and lead the events that help make the club what it is.
Kathy, Young Sierrans Chairperson since 2004 |
|
In addition to being club chairperson and co-founder, Kathy is also an active outings leader. She led the first Young Sierrans hike on September 18, 2004. Since then, Kathy has organized, scouted, and led several others. Currently, she is working on helping other leaders in training to obtain their Sierra Club hike leader certifications.
On July 25-28, 2005, Kathy hiked the Inca Trail in Peru. This challenging adventure consisted of hiking across 30 miles with an elevation gain of 9800 feet and a maximum elevation of 13,776 feet. Kathy trekked along the Inca Trail through Warmiwanusca Pass (literally translated from Quechua to English as "Dead Woman's Pass!"). Her journey included seeing many Inca ruins such as Runkuraqay, Patallacta, Phuyhpatamarka, Sayamarca, and perhaps the most beautiful of them all, Machu Picchu.

Lloyd, Hike Leader since 2005 |

|
Lloyd started hiking at the age of three, when his grandparents and family would lead him through Sabino Canyon and up the Finger Rock trail of the Catalina Foothills in Tucson, Arizona. He continued on other hiking, camping, docenting, and rockhounding adventures throughout his childhood in Arizona and then later to some extent in Ohio and New York (including some camping in the Catskills in addition to significantly more urban treks). He has enthusiastically scouted and attended many hikes since discovering the Young Sierrans group.
With a pocket full of good old raisins and peanuts (GORP), Lloyd is contemplating nature along the Appalachian Trail during Angela's legendary ten mile trek from Harpers Ferry, West Virginia to Gathland State Park in Maryland on March 5, 2005.

Amy, Hike Leader since 2006 |

|
Amy aspires to greater ruggedness and is working on undermining stereotypes about librarians by becoming a trail leader. She has been hiking with the Young Sierrans since the spring of 2005. |
Shel, Hike Leader since 2007 |

|
Shel teaches visual art to high school students, and in the summers
can usually be found in the mountains somewhere out west. She lived in
Portland, Oregon and Seattle, Washington for some time, where she
learned to love the outdoors and picked up the habit of trying to draw
or identify anything blooming near the trail. Her hair expands to
unusual dimensions when the weather's humid and she puns badly and
often. She's been attending events with the Baltimore Young Sierrans
for several years now. |
John, Hike Leader since 2008 |

|
Although an office monkey by trade, after the 5pm
hour
you'll find this species of Sierran enjoying all
things outdoors, from the sublime to the
ridiculous.
He will drink your milkshake, but make you a new
one. |
Angela, Retired Co-Founder |
Angela was one of the original co-founders of the Young Sierrans. She has years of experience with the outdoors, having backpacked and/or hiked all over Maryland and Virginia including the Appalachian Trail and Zion Canyon in Utah. Angela also has extensive experience with outdoors clubs, having been quite active in Washington D.C. area clubs and also Baltimore Inner City Outings (BICO).
As the only certified leader for the Young Sierrans during its first six months, Angela successfully recruited, mentored, and trained the group's initial leaders and organized all scouting trips. Due to her leadership and energy, the group went from one to four certified leaders in its first nine months. |
