Participating organizations include the Maryland Native Plant Society and Sierra Club. Gov. Parris N. Glendening has signed a deal to buy 1,850 acres of prime forest land along the Potomac River front for $25 million. The site contains specimens of 16 species of trees over 200 years old, 41 state endangered plant species, a haven for nesting bald eagles, and early Native American and colonial historic features. Environmentalists have a one-year option to buy the remaining 375 acres of the 2,225-acre waterfront tract. The Conservation Fund, a nonprofit group, will lead the effort to amass the needed funds of $2 million to $4 million. Gather at Ruth Swann Park's library parking lot at 10am on Saturday, November 14th. The trip will go until 4pm. Led by Marc Imlay and Rod Simmons, participants will remove invasive growth to uncover rare natives such as the Virginia Day Flower, grape fern species, and Chinquapin Oak. This is not a clean-up day. Volunteers will work with site managers to remove Japanese stilt grass, Chinese yam, English Ivy, Russian Olive, and the inpenetrable multi-flora rose.
