LESIONS OF WEBSITESAs the Pfiesteria crisis has grown, so too has information on the web about the crisis. Listed below are a selection of some of the most interesting websites dealing with the little toxic ambush predator, its researchers and regulators and others affected by the whole mess. Citizen's Pfiesteria Action Commission This is the official site for the workings of the Hughes Commission (otherwise known as the Citizen's Pfiesteria Action Commission). It has many links to other sites dealing with this issue but its meeting notices are not updated in a timely fashion. www.epa.gov/r3chepk/ This in the US Environmental Protection Agency's Chesapeake Bay Program Office's home page. It also has links to other places in the federal government. www.mdsg.umd.edu/fish-health/index-html The University of Maryland's Aquatic Pathology Center maintains an elaborate homepage through sponsorship by Maryland Sea Grant and NOAA with all kinds of information about disease in the water and water creatures. You can do a keyword search of this visit (and others on the University of Maryland server). www.agcentral.com/ag-page/ Ag-Page offers links to virtually any other website dealing with agricultural issues through a search engine. This is an excellent site. www.mda.state.md.us/pocomoke/ This is the Maryland Department of Agriculture's website for Pfiesteria related matters. It will allow you to monitor MDA's approach to the problem and compare it with DNR's. www.ewg.org/ The Environmental Working Group, maintains an excellent website on issues including farm, campaign contribution and right wing craziness by state. You can gather all the information you need about Maryland or any other state through its "where you live" feature. www2.ncsu.edu/unity/lockers/project/aquatic This lengthy website address is home to the Aquatic Botany Laboratory of Pfiesteria piscicida home page at North Carolina State University--the place where JoAnn Burkholder works. It has a number of her papers on line plus other useful scientific information. |
