Chesapeake Watershed Forum
Earl Bradley
On October 9-12, I attended the Chesapeake forum at the National
Conservation Training Center in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. The Forum
is an annual conference for watershed organizations and local
government officials from around the multi-state Chesapeake Bay region.
It is an opportunity to learn the latest scientific techniques in Bay
restoration and protection, address specific organizational capacity
building needs, focus on regional and watershed-wide needs, network
with other watershed organizations, and enjoy the beauty of the
watershed.
I was able to choose from a variety of sessions on topics such as
living shorelines , urban watershed forestry, sustainable agriculture’s
role in the Chesapeake Bay, improving stormwater management
regulations, using internet tools to get out your message, and managing
your organization’s programs and finances in hard times.
Saturday night, Hedrick Smith gave a presentation on the PBS
documentary “Poisoned Waters” that he produced, which describes the
growing hazards to human health and the ecosystem in Chesapeake Bay and
Pugent Sound. There was also ample time to network with members of
other organizations working to preserve and restore the environment. I
left the forum having learned new information on several topics and
recharged to work on environmental issues
