Smart Energy Solutions to Global Warming
The Sierra Club’s Cool Cities program is
one of the Smart Energy Solutions the Club has rolled out in this
country. The goal of Sierra Club is to reduce energy consumption in the
United States by 2% per year for 40 years. This will result in an 80%
reduction in carbon dioxide, a major contributor to global warming by
2050.
We have several Cool Cities Committees around Maryland, including one
in Anne Arundel County. This program was organized last fall and has
met several times since then.
Things we have accomplished so far:
- We asked County Executive Leopold to sign on to the
Seattle Mayor’s
agreement to lower carbon emissions, and he did!
- We sponsored a Global Warming Solutions program
starring Mayor Ellen
Moyer and had 75 people show up.
- We lobbied our Anne Arundel Delegates and Senators to
support several
Smart Energy Solutions bills, and several of them did.
Things we are doing in the future:
- Work with the County and the City to help implement
their energy
solutions programs
- Ask the County and City to pass green buildings
programs
- Encourage
County citizens to buy locally produced food and other products
- Have tables at the Step-it-up day (April 14th) and
Earth Day (April
21) with information on how individuals can reduce carbon output
- Hold regular meetings to generate other ideas on the
first Thursday
of the month. Next meeting is Thursday May 3, 7:00 at the Unitarian
Church on Dubois Road.
