Join Us at the 2010 Anne Arundel Science Fair
Judy Mauriello
Over 200 talented middle and high school students will participate in
the 2010 Anne Arundel Regional Science and Engineering Fair Saturday,
March 6, 2010 at North County High School. For the last several years
the Anne Arundel Group of the Sierra Club has supported the Fair by
awarding prizes for the best projects that investigate issues related
to the region’s environment.
The Sierra Club awards a plaque and $100 to the student selected as
having the most outstanding environmental project. Up to 3 certificates
of merit and $50 each are awarded for projects judged to be Excellent.
We need 10 Sierra Club members to volunteer to be judges
for our
awards. This is a wonderful opportunity to interact with some of
the
best and most motivated students in our schools. The participants are
enthusiastic, talented and inspiring to talk to. You don’t have to be a
scientist to be one of our judges. Just interested in talking to the
students and able to use a set of criteria to rate the projects.
We evaluate projects related to the environment from several different
categories, possibly ranging from chemistry to environmental science to
electrical engineering. Four criteria are used in our evaluations:
- the topic has environmental implications for the
Chesapeake Bay
- the expected results of the study are not totally
obvious
- the student has collected and analyzed data
- the student is able to support the conclusion using
the data gathered.
This year’s Science Fair will take place at North County High School on
the morning of Saturday, March 6, 2010. Judges will need to be there
from 9 am to 12:30 pm.
If you can help us out by serving as a Science Fair
judge please
contact Judy Mauriello by email at jzmaur@gmail.com
or by phone at

Come join us. Helping to judge the Science Fair is
always an interesting and enjoyable experience!
