Sugarloaf Mountain Hike
Nicki Eger
The Anne Arundel County group of the Maryland Sierra Club Chapter set
out for Sugarloaf Mountain on April 12th, with overcast skies and warm
spring weather. Sugarloaf is on private property, held by the
Stronghold Corporation, but open for public use. The trails are
well-marked and maintained, and free maps are available near the start
of the trail.
We ran into a former Annapolitan who was there to hike with another
group, but opted to join ours instead, making us a nice group of five.
Pictured are Jan Hoffman, Dawn Patterini, Andy Moser, and Toby Somers.
We started at the bottom of the mountain and hiked our way up to the
summit amid flowering trees, skunk cabbage, and unusual lichen and moss
formations on the tree stumps. Several woodpeckers were heard, but we
didn't manage to catch sight of any of them. We stopped at several
sweeping overlooks, including White Rocks, where we took a break for
lunch.
The weather wavered between sunny and overcast, but ultimately, the
rain held off for the entire 8-mile hike, and all agreed that it turned
out to be a great day for the hike.
