Don't Forget North County

Ed Sabin

If you haven't already, come visit two north county parks which offer great views of the Patapsco River and Chesapeake Bay. The parks are Ft. Smallwood Park and Weinberg Park, both located at the east end of Ft. Smallwood Road in Pasadena.

Ft. Smallwood Park, about 100 acres in size, is located at the end of a peninsula. The park has 5000 feet of waterfront facing Rock Creek, the Patapsco River, and the Bay. Weinberg Park, not yet developed, is about twice the size of Ft. Smallwood Park and has almost twice the length of waterfront mainly facing Rock Creek.

From Ft. Smallwood Park you can see, on a clear day, the Eastern Shore, Pooles Island, Hart-Miller Island, Craighill Channel light houses, North Point (where the British landed in their attack on Baltimore in the 1812 War), Sparrows Point steel mill, Key Bridge, and finally, the tall buildings of downtown Baltimore, in the distance to the west. A new 380-foot fishing pier has been added to the park which is open every day except Wednesdays. Ft. Smallwood Park, previously owned by Baltimore City is now under long term lease to Anne Arundel County. This park is a good location in the fall for spotting migrating raptors.
