Homeport Farms Park: An Acre Reforested
Liz Vanden Heuvel

We Did It! Homeport Farms Park has 400 new trees and shrubs, planted in
less than three hours by about 50 volunteers in the pouring rain on
Saturday, October 17. John Leopold, the County Executive, was present
and planted the first tree. He was assisted by, from left, Bud Reaves
(County Forester), Erik Michelson (Executive Director of the South
River Federation) David Prosten, our very own Group Chair , and Karyn
Molines (Supervisor of Cultural Resources).
We were all dressed in rain gear and hats so we looked a little like a
force from another planet, some all yellow, some green or black, even
red. Volunteers came from the South River Federation, the Annapolis
Rowing Club, area communities, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, Chesapeake
Paddlers and our Sierra Club Group. Thanks to Jane Story, Gene Milgram,
Deede Miller, Michael Murdoch, Young Lee, John Cochran, David Prosten,
and Walter Jacobs for their good work. Phyllis Saroff and Jack
Mawhinney also volunteered but when they came for the afternoon shift,
the deed was done. Each tree was planted and mulched. No need for
watering!
There were oak trees, pitch pines and several kinds of shrubs. A whole
acre reforested! These trees will not need our attention until Spring,
due to all the rain and their approaching dormancy. For now, we are
hoping to see $100,000 in the proposed 2011 budget to match a state
bond bill which might make it possible to fix up the buildings and/or
improve the water supply and move on towards the goal of having
community gardens and boating access for canoes and kayaks.
