Annual Dinner Honors Area Environmentalists
Some 75
(mostly) gourmet cooks participated in the Anne Arundel Sierra Club
group’s January 21 birthday celebration potluck dinner. They
honored three longtime environmental activists, and heard from the
club’s
new state director, Josh Tulkin (pictured at right).
After sharing in
an unusually bountiful table of appetizers, main courses, side dishes
and desserts brought by the attendees, they watched the awardees
presented with certificates of appreciation for their longtime
environmental efforts in the county.
Honored were Anne Pearson, who in 1994 established the Alliance for
Sustainable Communities; Ann Fligsten, coordinator of the Growth Action
Network of Anne Arundel County; and Dick Lahn, founder and director of
the Chesapeake Bay String of Pearls Project and director of the
Annapolis Sustainable Business Alliance.
Josh Tulkin, hired by the Maryland Chapter of the club a couple of
months earlier, spoke of his desire to involve more young people in the
club and outlined the club’s aggressive legislative agenda for 2012.
The Chapter now has five full-time employees, including three
conservation organizers, to work on statewide campaigns. There are no
staffers in any of the all-volunteer local groups.
The club also honored outgoing executive committee member Judy
Mauriello, who had served in leadership roles for several years.
Although stepping off the leadership panel, Judy will continue to be
involved in the club.
