Josh Cohen, Endorsed by Club
Wins Annapolis Mayor’s Seat
Two out of three candidates endorsed
by the Anne Arundel Sierra Club in the November 3 Annapolis City
elections were elected, thanks in part to Club efforts on their behalf.
Winning candidates backed by the club were Josh Cohen (D), for mayor
and Ian Pfeiffer (D) for councilman from Ward 7. Endorsee Greg
Stiverson, a Republican, came up short in his Ward 6 contest – but
ultimately was named by Cohen to be co-chair of the new mayor’s
transition team, along with Cohen’s primary opponent Zina Pierre.
The Club did a mailing to its members in the city on behalf of the trio
for the general election – and one for Cohen, a long-time member, in
his party primary as well – and a number of Club activists knocked on
doors, made phone calls and did literature drops.
Cohen was endorsed for his “consistent leadership on environmental
issues over a period of eight years as an Annapolis City Council member
and Anne Arundel County Councilman. He has an unparalleled record of
knowledge and achievement on vital issues of concern to our members and
all citizens worried about our quality of life and the protection of
our natural resources.”
Pfeiffer won the endorsement in Ward 7 “based on his thoughtful
responses to concerns over development, annexation, transportation,
water quality and other environmental concerns. His professional
experience with transportation issues, especially, led us to believe he
would be a valuable member of the Council.”
Stiverson was backed in Ward 6 “because of his long history in the city
and his clear understanding of environmental issues facing Annapolis
and the surrounding area. The Sierra Club was impressed by his depth of
knowledge about the challenges and threats confronting us. His
understanding and concern over nutrient runoff, a huge threat to our
tributaries and the Bay, would be particularly helpful to the Council.”
The Sierra Club made the endorsements after several days of candidate
interviews and discussion by the group’s political committee and
approval by the group’s ten-member Executive Committee.
Group Chair David Prosten has been named to Cohen’s Transition Team for
the environment.
