Sierra Club Endorses Cohen for Mayor; Stiverson, Pfeiffer for Council Seats

The Anne Arundel Sierra Club has endorsed Josh Cohen for Annapolis Mayor, Greg Stiverson for Council in Ward 6 and Ian Pfeiffer for Council in Ward 7.

Cohen had won the 1,400-member Club’s endorsement in the Sept. 15 Democratic Primary; the Club had made no Council endorsements at that time.

Club Chair David Prosten said Cohen deserved support for his "consistent leadership on environmental issues over a period of eight years as an Annapolis City Council member and Anne Arundel County Councilman. He has an unparalleled record of knowledge and achievement on vital issues of concern to our members and all citizens worried about our quality of life and the protection of our natural resources."

Prosten said the group was backing Stiverson in Ward 6 "because of his long history in the city and his clear understanding of environmental issues facing Annapolis and the surrounding area. The Sierra Club was impressed by his depth of knowledge about the challenges and threats confronting us. His understanding and concern over nutrient runoff, a huge threat to our tributaries and the Bay, would be particularly helpful to the Council."

Pfeiffer won the endorsement in Ward 7 "based on his thoughtful responses to concerns over development, annexation, transportation, water quality and other environmental concerns. His professional experience with transportation issues, especially, led us to believe he would be a valuable member of the Council."

The Sierra Club made the endorsements after several days of candidate interviews and discussion by the group’s political committee. The interviews followed submission by the candidates of an 18-part questionnaire asking their views on topics ranging from development, land use and transportation to stormwater runoff controls to recycling. The group has been conducting an endorsement process at the city and county government levels since its founding more than 25 years ago.
