Nearly 200 Participate in April 19 5K Run/Walk
Nearly 200 runners participated in the Anne Arundel Sierra Club's 14th Annual Earth Day 5K Race and Walk at Quiet Waters Park on Saturday, April 19, enjoying incredible weather and going home with plenty of prizes and treats. Among the runners and walkers were a wide array of strollers and family dogs, clearly spurred on by the perfect spring day.

Winning the race, with a time of 17:39, was Greg Houlgate. Finishing second and third, respectively, were Benjamin Allen and John Vangehuchten. The top finishing woman was Holly Marcum, with a time of 20:42. Second and third finishing women were Laurel Bell and Mary Weenson, respectively. Links to two listings of winners -- by age group and by overall finish -- are below.

Plaques went to the top male and female finishers, while medallions went to the winners in several age groups for boys and girls and men and women. Several hundred dollars worth of prizes went to lucky participants in a series of drawings held after the race winners were announced. Giveaways ranged from coupons for Ben & Jerry's ice cream cones to bottles of wine to gift certificates to local bistros and coffee shops, and a lot more.

The 5K is the Anne Arundel Sierra Club's big annual fundraiser. Runner entry fees and T-shirt sponsors help pay for the race's expenses and shirts that go to each participant, with remaining funds helping pay for the group's work over the year. Major financial sponsors this year were BB&T Bank, Bay Ridge Wine & Spirits, the Chiropractic Center of Annapolis, Boatyard Bar And Grill, Olmo Bros. Landscaping, K&B True Value Hardware, Chick & Ruth's Delly, Eastern Mountain Sports, and Greater Annapolis Veterinary Hospital. Whole Foods was very generous in contributing refreshments to the participants.

Dozens of volunteers helped with the event, and with the club's information table at the Earth Day event in Quiet Waters Park that followed the race.
