From Our Rivers and Streams to the Chesapeake Bay
The rivers in the Chesapeake watershed are the main pathways for pollution to reach the Chesapeake Bay. Since we want both clean rivers and a clean Bay, restoring the Chesapeake Bay is a great opportunity to accomplish several important goals all at once:
- Natural Resource Protection: wetlands, meadow and forests filter pollutants from stormwater. We need to protect these natural resources because they are not only beautiful, but play an important ecological role.
- Greening our urban communities: Green spaces in our towns and cities, such as rain gardens and green roofs help prevent flooding, absorb and filter polluted runoff, and make our cities more attractive.
- Creating beautiful cities and protecting natural resources through smart growth: Smart growth causes significantly less water pollution than sprawl development.
- Dealing with pollution from agriculture through practices that reduce an over-abundance of fertilizer, such as planting of crops that soak up left-over nutrients.
We can accomplish these goals through citizen involvement in two rewarding campaigns:
· The Watershed Implementation Plans (WIP) – Maryland’s Roadmap for Cleaning Up Our Rivers and Streams and the Chesapeake Bay
· The Clean Water, Healthy Families Campaign- The Sierra Club is working with The "Clean Water, Healthy Families" Campaign to clean up the Chesapeake Bay Watershed! This campaign focuses on three major issues including sprawl and septic systems, polluted run off and sewage plant upgrades. Already, five states have agreed to abide to a "pollution diet", now we need your support in making clean water a priority! Take action at http://www.cleanwaterhealthyfamilies.org/get-involved!
