OMalley versus Ehrlich: A Clear Choice for Governor

Flyer in Color (word doc)

A CLEAR CHOICE FOR GOVERNOR

In November we have a clear choice between two well known gubernatorial candidates: our current Governor Martin O’Malley and the former Governor and current corporate lobbyist, Bob Ehrlich.  Sierra Club supports Governor O’Malley.  Their records on the environment speak for themselves.

Issue

Governor O’Malley

Former Governor Ehrlich

Land Preservation

Preserved 28,000 acres of land using Program Open Space funds

Fully funded Program Open Space for the last two years despite a tight budget

×     Kept a secret list of public lands to sell for development.  Public outrage resulted in a Constitutional Amendment to prevent such sales in the future.

Chesapeake Bay

In 2008 and 2009, increased enforcement actions by 34% over the Ehrlich years, and collected larger fines.

Created the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund to implement clean up of the Chesapeake’s tributaries

Actively supported a fee to create funding for upgrading failing waste water treatment plants that were emitting waste into the Bay.

×     Abandoned rules to limit poultry manure runoff into rivers.

Staffing

Appointed people with strong environmental backgrounds to key environmental posts

×     Appointed industry insiders who fired agency employees dedicated to enforcing the law.

Issue

Governor O’Malley

Former Governor Ehrlich

Transportation

×     Continued full funding for the Inter County Connector (ICC), increasing pollution and destroying wetlands and habitat.

Supports a robust transit network including light rail for the state transit projects

×     Forced through funding and environmental approval for the ICC over previous objections of federal and state environmental agencies.

×     Supports substituting buses for light rail transit

Energy and Climate Change

Created EmPOWER Maryland to promote investment in energy efficiency

Signed into law a bill to get 20% of our energy from renewables by 2022

Actively supported the Global Warming Solutions Act

Actively supported the Clean Cars Act

×     Opposed a bill to create a grant program to promote renewables and energy efficiency

×     Opposed the Healthy Air Act for two years; finally signed it when it had a veto proof majority.

×     Opposed passage of the Clean Cars Act in 2005

Sierra Club supports Governor O’Malley!

But he won’t win if voters stay home!
