A CLEAR CHOICE FOR GOVERNOR
In November we have a clear choice between two well known gubernatorial candidates: our current Governor Martin OMalley and the former Governor and current corporate lobbyist, Bob Ehrlich. Sierra Club supports Governor OMalley. Their records on the environment speak for themselves.

√ Preserved 28,000 acres of land using Program Open Space funds
√ Fully funded Program Open Space for the last two years despite a tight budget |
× Kept a secret list of public lands to sell for development. Public outrage resulted in a Constitutional Amendment to prevent such sales in the future. |

Chesapeake Bay |
√ In 2008 and 2009, increased enforcement actions by 34% over the Ehrlich years, and collected larger fines.
√ Created the Chesapeake and Atlantic Coastal Bays Trust Fund to implement clean up of the Chesapeakes tributaries

√ Actively supported a fee to create funding for upgrading failing waste water treatment plants that were emitting waste into the Bay.
× Abandoned rules to limit poultry manure runoff into rivers. |

Staffing |
√ Appointed people with strong environmental backgrounds to key environmental posts |
× Appointed industry insiders who fired agency employees dedicated to enforcing the law. |

× Continued full funding for the Inter County Connector (ICC), increasing pollution and destroying wetlands and habitat.

× Supports substituting buses for light rail transit |

Energy and Climate Change |
√ Created EmPOWER Maryland to promote investment in energy efficiency
√ Signed into law a bill to get 20% of our energy from renewables by 2022
√ Actively supported the Global Warming Solutions Act
√ Actively supported the Clean Cars Act |
× Opposed a bill to create a grant program to promote renewables and energy efficiency
× Opposed the Healthy Air Act for two years; finally signed it when it had a veto proof majority.
× Opposed passage of the Clean Cars Act in 2005 |
