MUNICIPAL INCINERATORS

• Garbage is not renewable energy!
• Stop the Frederick incinerator! The proposed facility will have a 57 MW generator at a cost of $527 million to build and tens of millions per year to maintain and operate. If the incinerator is constructed, taxpayers will be paying a huge premium to burn their waste. The incinerator would be harmful not only fiscally, but environmentally as well, polluting the air we breathe with toxins and discouraging recycling.
Instead, people have proposed alternatives to incinerators, such as a plan that aims to reach a 70% diversion rate within the next 5-7 years, with the key elements being waste reduction, composting, and increased recycling. This alternative not only costs much less than incineration, but is also much more environmentally friendly.
