Cool Cities Internship

GOALS:  To learn about, participate in, promote, and build the Sierra Club’s Cool Cities Campaign under the auspices of the Energy Committee. To educate and recruit Sierra Club members, the public, and local cities to participate in the campaign and to change our energy using habits, systems, and choices. To build volunteers skills and to build working relationships amongst organizations, local governments, and citizens.

Will be supervised by Sierra Club MD Chapter Coordinator and Cool Cities Campaign Chair and local campaign leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

1.      Become familiar with Sierra Club Cool Cities Campaign through the volunteer support website.

2.      Outreach to the public at events, festivals, and fairs with educational materials and localized postcards to mayors. Set up an exhibit at the Maryland Municipal League conference, and 4th of July celebrations.

3.      Create an activist tool kit, Maryland Chapter brochure, or guide to getting involved for our members urging action in their local city.

4.      Coordinate an ongoing statewide letters-to-the editor effort.

5.      Create a section of the Maryland Chapter website promoting the Cool Cities campaign in Maryland. Post actions taken by cities with projected reductions of global warming greenhouse gas emissions and amounts of money saved.

6.      Encourage cities to make their own Cool Cities web pages listing accomplishments and efforts in their work against global warming.

7.      Write an article for the chapter newsletter, Chesapeake, about an energy issue, with interviews with our own Maryland Sierra Club Cool Cities activists, photos, or other material that will encourage readers to join the campaign and get active at a personal level.
