True Cost of Food Campaign (TCOF) Internship

GOAL:  To learn about, participate in, promote, and build the Sierra Club’s True Cost of Food Campaign. To educate and recruit Sierra Club members and the public to participate and change their eating and food buying habits and choices.

Will be supervised by Sierra Club MD Chapter Coordinator and mentored by the True Cost of Food Campaign Chair and local campaign leaders.

RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

  1. Become familiar with Sierra Club TCOF Campaign through the volunteer support website.
  2. Outreach to the public at events, festivals, and fairs with educational materials.
  3. Attend True Cost of Food Campaign (TCOF) outings to restaurants and farms.
  4. Outreach to traditional farm groups. Offer to show TCOF video.
  5. Volunteer and assist with the workings of a local CSA or alternative farm.
  6. Create a section of the Maryland Chapter website promoting the TCOF campaign and listing alternative sources of food including organic/CSA/free range/local/ and sustainably produced.
  7. Write an article for the chapter newsletter, Chesapeake, about a food issue, interesting food facts, interviews with our own Maryland Sierra Club activists who are producing good food, or a listing of alternative sources of food that will encourage readers to change eating habits. 
  8. Support development of the TCOF campaign with the nine Sierra Club MD Chapter Groups
    1. Attend group meetings or communicate with conservation chairs and offer to set up a program, show the TCOF video, and lead a discussion.
    2. Help schedule, advertise, and promote with phone calls to members living nearby to attend TCOF outings
    3. Compose media list for local outings (little organizations newsletters, journals, newspapers, radio, tv) deadline/contacts/ PSAs and announcements
    4. Produce public service announcements and submit them
  9. Communicate regularly with the Maryland Chapter Coordinator to report progress and get feedback and advice. Schedule weekly hours in the office, set up a personal calendar, maintain a journal & documentation and write a short (1-3 page) description and evaluation of your internship experience.
