Newsletter Advertising Internship

GOAL: To create an advertising section for the Maryland Chapter Newsletter Chesapeake which will help offset printing and distribution costs so that money can be used in Conservation Campaigns.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  1. Read previous issues of the Chesapeake to learn about the Sierra Club, to become familiar with environmental issues the club espouses, and to generate ideas about the types of organizations and people that might be interested or benefit by advertising in the newsletter and which might benefit the membership.
  2. Obtain copies of other Sierra Club publications that have advertising sections including some from the 9 local groups in Maryland, the national Sierra magazine, and other Chapters nationally.
  3. Investigate advertising policies used by other Sierra Club publications.
  4. Review internal Sierra Club rules for accepting advertisements nationally and at the local level.
  5. Propose an advertisement rate sheet to be approved by the newsletter committee.
  6. Create an advertisement contract form.
  7. Write a letter promoting potential benefits of advertising in the Chesapeake for use in soliciting ads.
  8. Develop a portfolio of sample advertisements. Design and create sample advertisements.
  9. Identify potential prospects and solicit advertisements.
  10. Contact Sierra Club Maryland Leaders to solicit discounted advertisements for the first issue that has an advertisement section and to distribute advertisement contract forms.
  11. Meet with, communicate with and work with Chesapeake Newsletter Editor and Newsletter Committee to ensure advertisements are properly placed.
  12. Meet regularly with Maryland Chapter staff person to report progress and get feedback and advice.
  13. Prepare a "How to" and suggestions guide for continuing and expanding the advertising section including documentation and lists generated and problems you encountered.
  14. Write a short description and evaluation of your internship experience.
