Outings Internship

GOAL: To learn about, participate in, and promote the Sierra Club Maryland Outings Program

Will be supervised by Sierra Club MD Chapter Coordinator and MD Chapter Outings Chair.

RESPONSIBILITIES MAY INCLUDE:

1. Become familiar with Sierra Club outings program through the volunteer support website.

2. Attend 4 or more Sierra Club outings per month. Distribute activist conservation materials to participants. Outreach to MWROP (Metropolitan Washington Regional Outings Program) and other local Sierra Club outings entities (Washington DC Chapter, Maryland Groups, Virginia Chapter) outings leaders and participants

3. Collect outings descriptions for the Maryland Newsletter "Chesapeake" from MWROP & group leaders and websites. Send descriptions to Dan Soeder, MD Chapter Outings Chair. Encourage leaders to incorporate educational components into descriptions.

4. Become a Sierra Club Maryland Chapter outings leader:

(1) Take training on web or in person with MD Chapter Outings Chair

(2) Attend outings and observe leader techniques

(3) Take first aide training (option CPR)

(4) If possible take MWROP outings training

(5) Co-lead 2 outings (must be advertised)

5. Support development of outings program for Prince George's or other Sierra Club MD Group

(1) Attend group meetings

(2) Meet with outings committee

(3) Help schedule, advertise, promote (phone calls to members living nearby) and attend several outings

(4) Promote outings to public and to club members

(5) Compose media list for local outings (little organizations newsletters, journals, newspapers, radio, tv) deadline/contacts/ PSAs and announcements

(6) Produce PSAs and announcements and submit them

6. Communicate regularly with the Maryland Chapter Coordinator to report progress and get feedback and advice. Schedule a few hours per week in the office, set up a personal calendar, maintain a journal & documentation and write a short (1-3 page) description and evaluation of your internship experience.
