Update 2/24/06 Montgomery County votes yes!
Neighbors and friends,
Congratulations. The Montgomery County Delegation did the right thing today. They voted Delegate Davis' bill MC / PG 111-06 favorably out of their Committee 16 - 7. Thanks to all of you who called, wrote, or otherwise pitched in to work on keeping the Chillum, Avondale, Hyattsville, and Mount Rainier communities safe, and our Metro Station a viable transit center for today and the future. If passed this bill will raise the bar for approvals of LNG facilities in Prince George's County, when they are special exception applications.
This is a big step, but we're not all the way done yet: this modest bill now goes before a bigger House Committee (we'll keep you posted which one) for further review, and then after, will have to go to a Bi-County Senate Committee onto another journey of approvals.
On the County Level, the next date for the Zoning Hearing Examiner's review of the proposed LNG Special Exception application is March 10th, and Washington Gas is continuing with its testimony (expert # 5). This is when they'll tell the Examiner how hard they tried to find a suitable location other than Chillum, but couldn't find any available 40 acre parcel of property in the entire Prince George's County region to purchase for that purpose.
Thanks again for the support and calls. We are still trying to raise funds to keep an advisory attorney representing the Avondale Citizen's Association in opposing the proposed LNG facility before the Zoning Hearing Examiner. You can assist by providing a tax-deductible donation to one of our Alliance partners, the Sierra Club Foundation, making a notation on the check "LNG Legal Fund."
