Dolly Sods Backpack, MNF, WV

Photos by Michael Juskelis and Don Ni, 2005/06/11-12.

Bear Rocks from our starting point.

Although waning at home, the wild azaleas are at their prime in Dolly Sods. The views will be saturated with Mountain Laurel in about two weeks.

The first stream crossing, one mile into the trip, and already we lose control of the Water Rats: Don, Andy and Leena!

We found a nice field of Flaming Orange Azaleas on Raven Ridge. Judging by the amount of wood, this must be the mother of the rest.

The view back at Raven Ridge from Cabin Mountain.

A late lunch on Rocky Knob. [First photo by Mike, second by Don.]

Don sitting on top of the world!

Day 2: The closer prominent ridge is Breathed Mountain.

The Water Rats at it again, this time at "The Forks of Red Creek".

This Northern Water Snake refused to leave. He seemed to be equally entertained by the Water Rats' antics.

A more tranquil view of "The Forks".

Andy's cunning eye was able to spot these minute carnivorous Round-leaf Sundew (Drosera rotundifolia) plants, along Dobbin Grade.

Andy also spotted this Hummingbird Moth working over an Azalea.

The group at the end of the trek, tired but satisfied. [Don]
