This is how the Nike missile radar base (BA-79 Granite, MD) looked back in May. The radar towers were torn down early this summer (when operational, the towers held radar antennas inside domes). The only things left to see on this hike were the control building and some patches of dirt. The missile launch area is a half mile to the west, off Hernwood Rd. The base was opened in 1954 and closed in 1974. Photo by Arden Blair, 2004/05/15.
